Manchester United: Pogba latest; Spaniard to Juventus; Mourinho looking to release stars
Paul Pogba is still the name apparently at the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list, with the Sunday papers awash with rumours about the Frenchman’s impending move to Manchester United.
According to Spanish newspaper , United have reached an agreement with Juventus and the midfielder himself. They claim that under the agreement the Italian club will be paid £100 million – a world record fee – for the services of their talisman. Additionally, Pogba will earn £11 million a year should he make the switch to Old Trafford, with a staggering £20 million in commission going to the player’s agent, Mino Raiola.
Earlier this week, that he had four transfer targets for the summer. With the acquisition of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all confirmed, it appears his sights are firmly set on Pogba as his final, and most sensational signing.
However, with the former United youngster lining up for his country in tonight’s Euro 2016 final against Portugal, the yesterday that no discussions had taken place as the player does not want to be distracted ahead of his preparations for the game. that he does not wish for any negotiations to be dragged out, so it is possible that we may start to see some real progress after the midfielder’s involvement in the competition, which concludes tonight.
Meanwhile, the are reporting that United have offered Juan Mata to Juventus as a makeweight in the deal. The 28-year-old had been linked with a move to Everton, but the prospect of European football with the Old Lady may prove too tempting for him.
The fact that Mata is being linked with a move away from the club is not too much of a surprise considering that Mourinho has never really been a fan of the Spaniard. Mata joined United in 2014 after Mourinho had deemed him surplus to requirements at Chelsea, and he appears to have taken a similar view upon taking the reigns at Old Trafford.
The news will come as a disappointment to many United supporters who have taken to the midfielder during his two and a half years with the club. The arrival of Mkhitaryan appears to have sealed Mata’s fate, and despite his huge popularity many fans will understand Mourinho’s decision. The Spanish international appears to have settled in the North West, and a summer switch to Goodison Park seemed feasible earlier in the week, but it looks as though a move to Turin could now be on the cards.
Finally, have claimed that Mourinho is willing to let up to eight players leave the club this summer. In addition to Mata, it is being reported that Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Adnan Januzaj may all be on their way out this summer as Mourinho attempts to cut down his squad.
The former Chelsea manager often likes to work with a trimmed down squad, and the report claims that he would like to work with a core of 22 players this time around. Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Depay all joined The Red Devils last summer but struggled to pick up any momentum over the course of the season.
At 31, it would be no surprise if Schweinsteiger was not seen as part of Mourinho’s plans, but the other two players are still of an age where they could improve markedly. Depay may have struggled to adjust last season, but at 22 is still only young and is a player Mourinho could certainly work with.
As for Blind and Rojo, it is a surprise to many supporters that they are being linked with an exit, particularly as United’s defensive options are rather sparse. Blind is not a conventional Mourinho defender, however, he has surely done enough in his time at Old Trafford to show that he has a part to play for the time being.
On the other hand, Mourinho may be wise to off-load Rojo after an inconsistent spell at the club. The 26-year-old has never really convinced, and the signing of Bailly, along with the emergence of a number of youngsters towards the end of the season such as Timothy Fosu-Mensah, may signal the end of his United career.
