Manchester United: Pogba latest; rivals midfielder targeted; City rival club for youngster
Despite lacking Champions League football over the upcoming season, Manchester United are still being linked with the biggest names in football, and the prospect of a sensational world record transfer for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba still appears to be a possibility.
Pogba’s agent has reportedly agreed to the package United have proposed to their former starlet, who left Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2012, and the club have no problem in meeting Juventus’ asking price, which could reach in excess of £100 million.
Despite the preposterous numbers involved in this potential transfer, it is becoming increasingly likely that the transfer will happen, and Jose Mourinho is his season around having Pogba in the team. Neither United or Juve wish for the transfer to turn into a summer long saga, so if it the deal is going to happen, expect it to be within the next two to three weeks, before the start of the new season.
There is no doubt that Pogba would improve Manchester United’s current midfield scenario, and the transfer now hinges on whether the player wishes to return to Old Trafford or hold out at Juventus, playing in the Champions League.
Mourinho’s plans involving Pogba has already led to United’s new manager thinking about bringing in a potential partner for the Frenchman in midfield, and this has led the former Chelsea boss to Liverpool player Joe Allen.
No player has left Liverpool for Manchester United since 1938, but Allen’s game time at Liverpool has been limited under Jurgen Klopp and his performances at Euro 2016 for Wales, which caused him to be named in UEFA’s team of the tournament, has convinced the manager that an ambitious move could be on the cards.
Even if Liverpool are wishing to cash in on Allen, however, it is highly unlikely that they would sell their man to Manchester United, especially with West Ham and former club Swansea City interested in his signature. If the clubs can reach an agreement, though, Allen could theoretically be a very good partner for Pogba. His tidy passing style and tenacious tackling would allow the Frenchman the freedom to express himself and dominate the midfield. The transfer is a very unlikely one, but if it comes off, it could be a very good piece of business for United.
Finally, United may from Manchester City for West Ham youngster Reece Oxford, after Pep Guardiola sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action for the England under-19s against the Netherlands on Friday.
Oxford, who can play in both midfield and defence, made 12 appearances for the Irons last season as he broke into Slaven Bilic’s side, and has already been the subject of a failed £10 million bid from Bundesliga new boys RB Leipzig.
Thought to be worth around £15 million, Oxford would be a relatively expensive option, especially for such a young player. But with such a bright future ahead of him, it might be worth paying big money to ensure that their City rivals do not get the better of them in the race to sign the 17-year-old.
