Manchester United now unwilling to match demands for ‘incredible’ player who Liverpool wanted to sign this summer

Liverpool may have been thrown back in the race for one of their earlier targets after Manchester United hit an impasse.

Arne Slot has now had a couple of weeks at Liverpool since his appointment as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

However, the Dutchman is yet to see any new faces come through the doors at Anfield as he prepares his side for the new campaign.

The Reds have found themselves battling in the summer market alongside their bitter rivals Manchester United for signatures but are yet to prevail.

But an opportunity to get one over on the Red Devils may now be arising.

Liverpool see Manchester United fall short in race for experienced defender

The two Premier League sides were said to be battling it out over the young French defender Leny Yoro this summer.

It looks as if Erik ten Hag is set to get his man with the player now headed for Manchester to undergo a medical.

Although that may well be a significant blow to the Reds, it could well open the door for them to attack the market for another shared defensive target.

Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt is believed to have been a target for Liverpool and United but this may have changed over recent hours.

According to Florian Plettenberg, United’s interest in De Ligt has now taken a major blow with the Red Devils not willing to match Bayern’s demands.

The Bundesliga giants are said to be looking for an offer in excess of €50m (£42m) plus add-ons to sign the Dutch international.

With United unwilling to match those demands, this could well open the door once again for Liverpool to make their move if the centre-back is so keen to leave Bayern.

Matthijs de Ligt has already rejected Liverpool

One major hurdle, if Liverpool are to return, would be that the ‘incredible‘ De Ligt gave his priority to United over them earlier in the window.

It could mean both parties accepting what has gone on in the past with the player’s intention of joining United made very clear.

“Matthijs de Ligt has told his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, already one week ago that the only club allowed to be in negotiations with him, with his camp, with his agent, is Manchester United,” said .

De Ligt could find himself playing for a fellow Dutchman and alongside his nation’s captain Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

But it would all depend on whether both sides could look past what has already gone on earlier in the summer window.
