Manchester United: Chelsea to battle for £84m deal; Mourinho wants midfielder back
Manchester United are being linked with moves for next summer’s transfer window already, despite the last one closing just over a week ago. The start of September has seen them supposedly make contact with the agent of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, as well as plot another potentially world record breaking deal for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
The rumours surrounding Griezmann have not gone away, but been added to, as Chelsea look to get in the quest to sign the Frenchman, in what promises to be a ridiculous, drawn-out transfer saga over the next season.
The price for the Golden Boot winner from the Euros? Well, Griezmann is rumoured to have a release clause of £84 million, which would make him the third most expensive player in the world if the transfer were to go through.
It did look unlikely a few days ago that this move was even a possibility, due to the forward saying that he would not leave the club whilst Diego Simeone was manager. However, rumours are emerging in Spain that this could be the Argentine’s last season at the helm of the Vicente Calderon, which would greatly improve the chance of a move for Griezmann.
The striker has shown himself to be one of the best finishers in the game since his move to Madrid, and at 25, still has some of his best years ahead of him. He is a flexible option who can play anywhere across the front, and it is not hard to see why England’s biggest clubs are ready to commit to such a large deal.
But if Manchester United do shell out £84 million on Griezmann next summer, they will need to save a bit of money elsewhere when improving their squad, and one player believes that he can have an impact when he returns from a loan move this campaign.
20-year-old Pereira impressed Mourinho in pre-season, scoring in the friendly win over Wigan Athletic, before being sent on loan to Granada in order to aid his development. However, the Brazilian told that the manager likes his style of play and wants him back at the club next season.
Despite Pereira’s comments, it is difficult to forget that the youngster was named among a group of players that Mourinho saw as priority to ship out of the club over the summer, so his chances of breaking back into the midfield look very difficult indeed.
He is a good talent, but with the likes of Pogba already there and Griezmann being rumoured, it will be harder than ever for the 20-year-old to make an impact next season.
Still, despite the manic spending on Manchester, it doesn’t seem to have put the club off from improving their academy, and they are intent on acquiring talent scout from West Bromwich Albion.
Hopcroft has identified the considerable talents of Saido Berahino, Jerome Sinclair and Jonathan Leko, amongst others, over the last few years, and United are looking to bring him in to enable the club to find more talents like the precocious Marcus Rashford.
Mourinho is not known for developing talent, but Rashford is becoming harder and harder to ignore, and if there are more players like the 18-year-old knocking on the door, that will only benefit the club.
