Manchester City set asking price for Julian Alvarez with Mikel Arteta keen for Arsenal to sign forward this summer

Manchester City have set their asking price for Julian Alvarez, while a report has shed light on Arsenal’s stance on signing the World Cup winner during the summer transfer window.

Julian Alvarez appears to be considering throwing a spanner in the works of Manchester City’s summer plans as Pep Guardiola’s side look to win a fifth Premier League title in a row this coming year. Of course, the Argentinian has largely acted as cover for Erling Haaland since arriving at the Etihad Stadium.

Fabrizio Romano claimed Alvarez is keen to play more, and that appears to have put a number of clubs on alert – with Mikel Arteta one of those apparently monitoring the situation.

Arsenal are interested in Alvarez, while Atletico Madrid have reportedly opened talks to sign Alvarez – but Manchester City are not willing to let the 24-year-old leave on the cheap.

Meanwhile, it appears that Arsenal are not planning to throw the kitchen sink at trying to sign Alvarez, with The Sun on Sunday reporting that the Gunners do not plan to get involved in a bidding war.

What some may not realise about forward’s season last year

Alvarez has had an unbelievable start to his career, having won the treble with Manchester City in 2023, while he has won two Copa America titles and the World Cup with his country.

His record last season was quietly outstanding, with 19 goals and 13 assists in 54 games in all competitions. He did probably start a lot more than many realise, but many of those starts came with Alvarez playing almost as a second striker, working around Haaland.

Arsenal are in a strong position heading into the season, with Kai Havertz surprising a lot of people last year. If the German leads the line this coming campaign, Arsenal will be in a strong position.

But if something special comes along, Edu and Arteta would be right to consider their options – and Alvarez arguably ticks a lot of boxes. Phil Foden has labelled Alvarez ‘magical’ previously, so there may be plenty of Arsenal fans urging their club to make a move before they miss out.

However, it seems that the Gunners are quite relaxed about the situation.
