Manchester City round-up: Forward could be out for season; Bayern-man linked with Guardiola reunion; midfielder reveals targets
in The Guardian this morning, concerns at Manchester City are growing that 19-year-old forward Gabriel Jesus could be out for the rest of the season with his broken metatarsal.
Jesus was forced off early on against Bournemouth on Monday evening after injuring his foot trying to reach a cross, and the club announced yesterday the severity of the injury.
Manchester City haven’t set a date for the perceived time to recover, but the report suggests that it is becoming increasingly likely that the Brazilian won’t feature again this season.
Recovering from a metatarsal fracture typically takes between two and three months – which would mean Jesus could return in late April at the earliest – but Guardiola might not risk him after then.
Jesus has made an immediate impact on the Premier League this season, taking Sergio Aguero’s starting spot in the side after scoring three times in four league appearances.
Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has said he’s flattered by mention of a potential reunion with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City over the summer transfer window.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s clash with Arsenal tonight, Neuer admires Guardiola from their time together in Germany but that a move is unlikely.
The 30-year-old said:
“There was no contact and, as you know, I’m happy and satisfied here and I’ve just extended my contract.
“It honours me that there’s speculation and talk about it. Pep still has my phone number but he hasn’t called me, so everything is alright.”
Manchester City are believed to be looking for a new goalkeeper once the current season ends, as Willy Caballero is out of contract and Claudio Bravo has struggled to adapt to Premier League life.
Raheem Sterling has said that he needs to work on being clinical in front of goal, despite already matching his goal-scoring record from last season.
The Manchester City midfielder scored during the win over Bournemouth earlier in the week, topping off an exceptional performance, but he insists there’s room for improvement in his game.
, Sterling said:
“I was not really thinking about that (another goal against Bournemouth).
“I was just trying to get on the score sheet and that doesn’t always happen. I need add more goals to my game and I’m really happy to get on the score sheet.”
The 22-year-old has scored six times in 23 league appearances this season, but has only managed to convert just over 17% of the chances he’s had in front of goal.
