Manchester City round-up: £100million star targeted; Fulham youngster wanted; Guardiola on Kompany issues
According to over the past day, Manchester City are set to break the record transfer fee by splashing out £100 million on Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi.
The report alleges that Messi’s future in Spain is still unsure, with a new deal still yet to be agreed between the 29-year-old and the club, and Pep Guardiola looks set to capitalise.
Messi’s current contract at the club is into its final 16 months, but after awarding both Luis Suarez and Neymar with new deals it seems Barcelona may not be able to meet the striker’s financial demands.
This could open the door for Manchester City to pounce, with Guardiola set to use his previous ties to the Argentine to entice him to the Etihad Stadium over the summer transfer window.
Messi scored twice on Sunday evening, including a late penalty, as Barcelona laboured to a 2-1 win over lowly Leganes in La Liga – leaving the Catalans within one point of leaders Real Madrid.
There’s more transfer news linking Manchester City to new arrivals as Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon and wants to bring him to Manchester.
Sessegnon, 16, plays at left-back for the Championship side and has impressed hugely since making his Fulham debut – leading the Premier League side to turn their head at his huge potential.
It is believed that Fulham will want a fee of up to £8 million for the teenage wonderkid, and The Sun says that City’s Spanish boss will be more than willing to match that once the current season ends.
Sessegnon has been touted as a left-back following in the Gareth Bale mould due to his attacking abilities, and he featured for just over half an hour during Fulham’s 3-0 FA Cup loss to Tottenham last night.
Away from rumours and speculation, Pep Guardiola has said that Vincent Kompany’s omission from Manchester City’s FA Cup match at Huddersfield Town on Saturday is no cause for concern.
It was heavily thought that the Belgian international would make his return to the side, but he pulled out due to a leg problem – yet Guardiola has played down this latest setback.
, the Spaniard said:
“Kompany was not able to play today but it is not a big issue.”
The 30-year-old captain has only managed 341 minutes of football since the new season began in September – with over a quarter of those coming in the previous FA Cup round at Crystal Palace.
Guardiola didn’t mention how long Kompany would remain on the sidelines for.
