Manchester City Player Ratings: How did Pep’s side rate against Manchester United?
Manchester City faced rivals Manchester United in the only game on Thursday.
Pep Guardiola’s side did all they could to win the game, but none of the players were able to change the game with their talent.
A point is better than nothing but they will be disappointed not to have won the match.
Here’s how Manchester City rated in their top four clash with Manchester United…
Claudio Bravo – 5
The Manchester City keeper did little in this game to silence his doubters as he looked nervy once again. Despite not having to do much, he nearly gifted the Red Devils a goal as he flapped at a fairly routine cross.
He went off injured in the 79th minute with what looked like a calf injury.
Pablo Zabaleta – 5
Defensively, the Argentinian had a nightmare against Anthony Martial early on but the Frenchman’s influence faded and Zabaleta had little to do.
He did what needed to be done when called upon but didn’t really offer much going forward, as was the case with many City players on the night.
Vincent Kompany – 6
Kompany’s role for the night was to keep close tabs on Marcus Rashford and he did just that. However, it wasn’t a difficult job to do with the young Englishman isolated up front.
He gave away a few needless fouls which stunted City pressure and allowed Mourinho’s side a breather, but overall, the Belgian put in a fairly solid performance in what was his third start in a row since returning from injury.
Nicolas Otamendi – 6
Much like Kompany, Otamendi didn’t have a load to do but did well when called upon. He did make one spectacular block where he threw himself at an oncoming shot. It was nice to see some aggression and passion from a City player in what was a fairly boring, dire affair.
Aleksander Kolarov – 7
It was perhaps a surprise to see Kolarov in the starting lineup but the City fullback impressed on the night. Going forward he delivered some excellent crosses and had several shots himself, one of which looked really threatening to David de Gea’s goal.
Fernandinho – 6
With Manchester United opting to ‘park the bus’, especially late in the game when down to 10 men, it was down to the likes of Fernandinho to unlock the Red Devils’ defence. Although having much of the ball the Brazilian often found himself passing sideways or
He did battle effectively in midfield, however, which was important in such a scrappy affair.
Yaya Toure – 6
Yaya Toure failed to have an influence on this tie. He made some driving runs but he looked lethargic and tired throughout the whole game.
Raheem Sterling – 5
The final ball is often the area of the game that Raheem Sterling is criticised for and he was poor in this regard throughout the Manchester derby.
Though his movement and interplay were often dangerous, his delivery let his teammates down on numerous occasions.
Leroy Sane – 4
Much like Sterling, Sane was poor on the night as well. He looked half the player he has shown to be at times this season. Offering next to nothing going forward, a poor performance was rounded off by several misplaced passes throughout the night.
Kevin de Bruyne – 8
The Belgian was the best performer in the derby and he was the only one that tried to get a grip on the game and win it for his side.
He always looked to go forward and was really unlucky not to get an assist when Sergio Aguero was unable to steer De Bruyne’s fabulous cross into the back of the net.
Sergio Aguero – 6
The Argentinian looked posed somewhat of a threat all night, trying to help create chances or score himself. However, he will be gutted to a have missed two golden opportunities.
He hit the post after a ball was flashed across the face of the goal and then failed to re-direct De Bruyne’s cross past David de Gea. Strikers are measured on goals and Aguero’s finishing really let him down on the night.
Willy Caballero (sub 79′) – 6
The Argentinian keeper came on for the injured Bravo and did little in the last 10 minutes.
Jesus Navas (sub 80′) – 6
The Spaniard replaced the disappointing Leroy Sane late on and like Caballero, he did next to nothing in that period.
Gabriel Jesus (sub 85′) – 7
Although he only had a short period on the field, the Brazilian displayed the special talent that he has. Jesus, returning from a long injury, got ahead of Daley Blind to score before it was ruled out. Because of his inexperience, he made the wrong run but that will be corrected with time, his initial movement in the build-up was that of a seasoned professional.
