Manager with 146 career wins “stands out” to Liverpool as Xabi Alonso alternative

Liverpool have taken note of Ruben Amorim in case Xabi Alonso cannot be hired to replace Jürgen Klopp this summer.

That is according to Gianluigi Longari of TV Dello Sport.

So, what is the situation involving Liverpool and Ruben Amorim? Let’s take a look…

Liverpool view Ruben Amorim as potential Jürgen Klopp replacement

Well – according to Longari – Alonso is Liverpool’s No.1 choice to replace Klopp.

However – as the Spaniard’s stock rises, due to the fact Bayer Leverkusen sit top of the Bundesliga – alternatives have to be lined up in case a deal cannot be agreed.

Interestingly, Longari claims that Amorim – currently in charge of Sporting CP – “stands out” to Liverpool as a backup option to Alonso.

The Italian journalist on X (previously known as Twitter): “Liverpool evaluations in progress for the bench. Many candidates in the running, the first on the list of Liverpool is Xabi Alonso.

“Among the alternatives taken into consideration by Liverpool, the name of Ruben Amorim currently managing Sporting stands out.”

The 39-year-old’s side currently sit second in the Primeira Liga this season on 49 points, two behind Benfica with a game in hand.

Amorim actually guided Sporting CP to the Primeira Liga title in 2021 – it was the club’s first league title success since 2002.

Ruben Amorim profile

Some may not know much about Amorim – who was apparently rejected by Tottenham – so let’s take a look at some statistics.

The Portuguese tactician has overseen games as a manager, winning 146 of those outings while drawing 28 and losing 33.

Amorim has impressively averaged 2.25 points per game from these 207 matches, with his sides scoring 440 goals and conceding just 186.

The man from Lisbon typically adopts a 3-4-3 formation, which is similar to how Liverpool line up when Klopp deploys Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role.

If Alonso cannot be lured back to Anfield, Amorim would be a very exciting alternative – to say the least.
