Manager hints that his ‘world-class’ player is going to sign for Arsenal
With just under two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Edu and Mikel Arteta haven’t quite finished their summer spending at Arsenal.
Arsenal delivered a familiar performance when beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday.
Bukayo Saka impressed for Arsenal, as did the likes of Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard, who was once again superb in the middle.
Declan Rice also worked tirelessly as Arteta’s number eight, covering so much ground and doing good work off the ball.
Although, Thomas Partey, who played in the pivot, did look like a liability at times.
The 31-year-old was excellent in moments, often breaking the lines in familiar fashion, but he misplaced several costly passes in unnecessary fashion.
Partey’s performance proved exactly why Arsenal want to sign Mikel Merino, a deal that is still not quite completed.
However, judging by the tone of Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil after his side’s defeat on Sunday, it seems as if the ‘’ Spaniard could be on his way to north London very imminently.
Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil hints that Mikel Merino is en route to Arsenal
Merino was left out of Real Sociedad’s squad against Rayo Vallecano in the side’s 1-2 defeat, and when speaking via after the game, Alguacil even name-checked Arsenal’s name in regards to Merino’s future.
The manager mentioned that along with Robin Le Normand, who the club sold to Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad had lost two top talents.

Alguacil: “It is clear that there are no two players like Le Normand and Merino, and Real will not be able to replace those players with the same level. And I won’t even tell you if Zubimendi had left.
“There is a reason why Arsenal wants Merino and Liverpool was willing to pay Zubimendi’s release clause.
“I have asked for reinforcements in all positions because if we can improve it will be good for the team.
“Now is not the time to get nervous, we are not at 100% yet. We are Real Sociedad, what we have to do is work to be as happy at the end of the season as in previous years.”
Of course, Arsenal fans would be delighted to have a deal for Merino sealed and delivered.
The Spaniard won’t replace Partey, but could play as Arteta’s number eight meaning Rice could position himself as the pivot once again.
