Man United join Arsenal in race to sign ‘world class’ £60m midfielder

Manchester United are set to rival Arsenal for the signature of a highly-rated midfielder on the continent this summer transfer window.

Arsenal are closing in on their first signing of the summer Riccardo Calafiori, who is set to complete a long-awaited move from Bologna later this week.

Once completed, they’re expected to focus their attempts on landing an attacker and a midfielder, with one of their rumoured targets now attracting interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Man United and Arsenal want to sign Martin Zubimendi

According to the , Manchester United have placed Real Sociedad and Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi, labelled as ‘world class’ per , on their transfer shortlist.

The Gunners have been keeping tabs on Zubimendi for weeks but it’s United who now appear ready to accelerate their interest.

The 25-year-old starred in the Euro 2024 final against England after coming on as a substitute for Rodri at half-time and his performance has evidently put clubs on red alert.

It’s claimed he could cost around £60m, so it certainly won’t be a straightforward deal to complete for Edu Gaspar – who has already allocated a substantial wedge of he transfer budget on Calafiori.

Arsenal also looking at Mikel Merino

With United seemingly ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Zubimendi, Arteta’s chiefs could opt for his teammate Mikel Merino, who is a much cheaper alternative.

The 28-year-old has one year left on his contract at the La Liga outfit and is expected to cost around £33m.

So, it’d make much more sense to move for Merino and allocate funds elsewhere, particularly on a striker.

In other news, ‘Outstanding’ midfielder may have now played his last minutes for the club.
