Man United fans divided as Paul Scholes reveals reason his ticket for crucial Europa League game was cancelled

Manchester United have had a shocking season, as they currently sit 16th in the Premier League, their worst-ever finish in the modern era.

Europa League was their last chance of salvaging their season, but they lost the final to Tottenham, who ended their 17-year trophy drought.

But the issues at Man United extend far beyond the pitch. Behind the scenes, the situation is equally bleak, with the relationship between the club and its fanbase arguably at an all-time low.

In February last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, via INEOS, took a minority stake in the club and assumed control of football operations. Since then, a series of cost-cutting decisions have sparked controversy and frustration across the board.

Some of the decisions haven’t just affected fans and staff; they’ve even impacted club legends like Paul Scholes.

Fans react as Paul Scholes reveals how Manchester United cancelled his ticket

While on The Overlap, former midfielder Paul Scholes agreed with a fan complaint about the club cancelling his ticket due to an outdated card.

Recalling how he faced a similar experience recently, Scholes narrated: “The same thing happened to me with the Lyon game. If you change your card number and don’t update it, they try to charge your old card or account, but it doesn’t go through.

“So, like you say, the day before the game, you might see the email. Too late. Ticket’s gone.”

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender and fellow pundit, jokingly responded: “So Manchester United cancelled Paul Scholes’ ticket for the game. Headline piece. Sir Jim Ratcliffe at it again.”

Man United fans were quick to react to this revelation, but not all were on the same page. Some pointed fingers at the club.

One expressed his surprise that a club legend like Scholes had to pay for a ticket: “Let me get this right, Scholsey is having to buy a ticket to a Man Utd game?…..wow”

Some criticised Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with one commenting: “Not sure Ratcliffe knows how to run the club. He might be even worse than the Glazers.”

Another said: “Strip the sir from this Ratcliffe guy, he isn’t anywhere near it.”

However, not all fans were sympathetic. Some placed the blame on Scholes for not updating his card or checking his email:

One said: “How do they slip an email under the radar? Just check your emails and keep your card number up to date. What do you expect them to do? Buy the ticket for you?”

Another said: “It’s his own fault for not checking.”

A third added: “So you fail to update your card details and check your email properly, yet you blame the club?”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Manchester United era so far

The early days of the INEOS era have been far from smooth. While fans hoped for a reset after the Glazers stepped away from football operations, the new regime under Sir Jim Ratcliffe has only added fuel to the fire.

They have been criticised for introducing major cost-cutting measures, such as ending Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassador role, cutting staff perks like free meals, and raising ticket prices. Ratcliffe even cancelled Man United’s staff Christmas party to save money.

Dan Ashworth also left Manchester United after just five months, reportedly due to disagreements over Ruben Amorim’s appointment, despite a £2–3 million compensation to Newcastle for his hiring.

Overall, the situation hasn’t improved as fans hoped after the Glazers stepped away from football operations.

While the club’s performance remains stagnant on the pitch, things have only worsened under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will truly be judged by how he backs Amorim in the summer transfer window, with the Portuguese manager hoping for a complete squad overhaul.
