Man United considering move for £60m midfielder who ignored a contract offer from Arsenal
It shouldn’t really be a surprise that both Arsenal and Manchester United have often overlapped in their search for a new midfielder this summer.
Erik ten Hag is pining for a new number six, someone who can repeat the levels that Casemiro initially delivered at Old Trafford, before his form dramatically fell off.
And whilst Mikel Arteta would also be happy to recruit a new holding midfielder too, he’s been slightly more versatile in his own search.
Although Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Mikel Merino right now – a typical number eight, Arteta was also open to the arrival of a six.
Declan Rice is now enjoying a more advanced role, and whilst it appears to be Arteta’s preference to continue that experiment, he could move the Englishman deeper for the right arrival.
That being said, Merino isn’t the only Real Sociedad midfielder whom Arsenal have been interested in this summer.
Arsenal tabled a contract offer to Martin Zubimendi back in June according to reports – only for their approach to be ignored.
Man United could still make Martin Zubimendi approach after Arsenal rejection
Undeterred by Arsenal’s frustrations, it now seems as if Man United could try their hand to sign Zubimendi.
As when mentioning that United have begun talks to sign Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, Sky Sports journalist also shared a list of alternative targets the club are considering.

Incidentally, Arsenal have also been linked with Fofana – who could be available for a cut-price this summer.
In his update, Sheth said that Richard Rios, Sander Berge and Sofyan Amrabat are also on the shortlist, too.
He shared: “Manchester United have held initial talks with Monaco over midfielder Youssouf Fofana.
“United looking at several options – including Richard Rios, Sander Berge, Martin Zubimendi & Sofyan Amrabat.
“Interest retained in PSG’s Manuel Ugarte – but not at prices being quoted.”
Of course, should their interest lead Manchester United to make a move for £60m-rated Zubimendi, it would be something of a coup if they could agree a deal.
The 25-year-old is evidently an immense talent, as he proved in his second half performance against England for Spain at the Euros.
But Zubimendi suggested he had no desire to join Arsenal, favouring to remain in Spain.
