Man City ready to put ‘unbelievable’ player on the same wages as Kevin de Bruyne and offer him new deal
- Exclusive from Graeme Bailey
Manchester City have one big name player now into the final year of his deal and they are looking to avoid that happening again with another important individual.
Pep Guardiola‘s side have made a faultless start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign as they sit at the top of the table.
With three wins from three and a goal difference of plus seven already, things are looking pretty good for the reigning champions.
The only concern which may be lingering around the Etihad may be over the long-term future of some of their key figures at the club.
Although Manchester City still have some security over midfielder Rodri’s deal with three years remaining, there may well be the desire to reward him for his impressive spell at the club.
TBR Football understands that Manchester City have opened talks with Rodri’s representatives over a new deal.

Manchester City have opened Rodri contract talks
Rodri has three-years left on his current deal at the Etihad but City are ready to reward him for his progress.
The Spaniard has emerged as one of the top midfielders in the world and that is backed up by the fact he is one of the favourites to claim the Ballon d’Or next month.
Rodri, who has been with City since 2019, has been linked with a move back to Spain with both Real Madrid and Barcelona said to be ready to offer him the chance in the future.
However, TBR understands that City are comfortable with Rodri’s situation and are ready to tie him down to a new deal that would see him join Kevin De Bruyne as the highest paid player at the football club.
De Bruyne is set to leave City in 2025 when his contract expires, which will then leave Rodri as the highest earner at the club.
What Pep Guardiola has said about Rodri
Having signed for City in a deal believed to be worth around £63m, the Spain international has become one of the world’s best midfielders.
Five years at City has seen Rodri become integral to Guardiola’s starting XI with 257 appearances to his name since landing in Manchester.
And it is apparent his manager fully believes he would be worth the £400k-per-week salary which De Bruyne is said to be earn.
“He’s an unbelievable player. He’s the best midfield player in the current world by far,Guardiola told the club’s .
“It’s because he’s able to do everything. So the tempo he has, especially his character when the situation is going wrong, he steps forward to arrive to the box, go backwards, the ability to play short and long. He’s always ready./p>
