Man City and Newcastle on alert as Champions League star opens door to £33m transfer

With one of European football’s rising stars opening himself up to a move in 2025, Premier League giants Manchester City and Newcastle United will be among those on red alert.

Because there is a very real chance that both clubs will be shopping in the same aisles next year. The aisle marked ‘goalkeepers’.

Manchester City’s long-serving number one Ederson is now the wrong side of 30 with Saudi Arabia ringing off the hook. Newcastle United’s Nick Pope will turn 33 in April, meanwhile. And though Pope remains a miracle-worker when it comes to old-school shot-stopping, the feeling is that Eddie Howe’s team might benefit from the addition of a glovesman more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

And this is where Lille talisman Lucas Chevalier comes in.

TBR can confirm that striker Jonathan David is not the only Lille star on Newcastle’s radar.

While David basks in the glory of those iconic Champions League finishes against Atletico, Real Madrid and Juventus, it is the man at the other end of the pitch who has ensured Lille have conceded just four goals in four European matches in 2024/25.

Lucas Chevalier opens door to Manchester City or Newcastle United

Lucas Chevalier’s outstanding reflexes came to the fore as Lille secured famous wins – and clean sheets – against both Madrid giants.

TBR understands that Man City, Newcastle and French champions PSG may soon test Lille’s resolve with Chevalier likely to become one of the most in-demand goalkeepers in the game over the coming months.

And if Lille were hoping to keep the speculation surrounding Chevalier to a minimum, they will not have been happy to see the 23-year-old academy graduate openly flirt with a move away from the Stade Pierre Mauroy on international duty.

A member of France’s 2024 Paris Olympics squad, Chevalier is now in contention to feature for the senior Les Bleus outfit for the very first time this month. And he knows that – if he is to challenge former Lille ‘keeper Mike Maignan for France’s number one jersey – Chevalier may have to follow in the footsteps of the man now standing between the sticks at AC Milan.

“I play for Lille. All the players play for big European clubs. Lille is a big European club but there are steps above,” Chevalier said during his Tuesday press conference.

“The number one spot depends on [playing for] a very big club. You have to have this clarity.”

Lille want over £30m for Man City’s potential Ederson replacement

According to , Lille are likely to demand a minimum £33 million for Chevalier.

La Liga leaders Barcelona have also been linked, amid Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s long-running injury issues. Barca brought ex-Arsenal ace Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement once the severity of Ter Stegen’s problem became clear, though the Pole is very much a short-term solution.

Lille coach Bruno Genesio, meanwhile, is not surprised to see both Chevalier and David catch the eye after helping to take down some of the continent’s A-list institutions on the biggest of stages.

“When you achieve such a performance at the highest level of European football, it further enhances the quality of the performance,” Lille coach Bruno Genesio told reporters after Chevalier denied Antonio Rudiger a late equaliser in that nail-biting triumph over Real Madrid.

“[Chevalier] has already done it in the league, notably against Strasbourg, where he allowed us to take a point. Without him, the match would have been over before the end.

“Here, in the Champions League, the visibility is even greater. Above all, it shows that he is capable of managing his emotions in this type of match, which is very important for a goalkeeper.

“[And for one who hopes to play at] the very, very high level.”
