Why it makes sense for Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola to reunite with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez?

The future of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez remains in doubt, with linking Manchester City with the forward, despite Arsene Wenger stating the Chilean is not for sale.

If the Citizens were to make a move, it would mark a reunion between manager Pep Guardiola and his former winger.

The two spent time together at Barcelona, where, as a manager, Guardiola became somewhat of a footballing icon, synonymous for his possession-based ‘tika-taka’ system that brought the Catalan club a great a deal of success.

Having only spent a year in England, his next conquest is to take Manchester City to the top, with hope of leading the Citizen’s to success domestically and then achieving new heights in Europe, which as of yet, they are yet to truly achieve.

The Spanish manager has quickly come to realise that the Premier League might be a far tougher nut to crack than previous tasks, managing only a third place finish in his first season, behind Chelsea and Tottenham.

At Barcelona, Guardiola had a prime Lionel Messi, at Bayern, a host of talented players, possibly the best squad in Europe, and although he has inherited a Man City squad blessed with many young prospects, he does not have a true talisman, a star.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez could be that player. Since arriving in England the Chilean has continually impressed. In three seasons in England’s top flight, Sanchez has scored 53 goals, often from a wide left position.

This most recent season has seen him play more as a striker for the Gunners, something Guardiola seems to have a taken a note of: “I think the position Arsenal are using him as a striker, in front, is perfect for him.”

This most recent season has seen him play more as a striker for Arsenal, and Guardiola has clearly taken note. As reported by the , he said: “I think the position Arsenal are using him as a striker, in front, is perfect for him.”

Perhaps the Spanish head coach feels he has some unfinished business with Sanchez, having only spent one season with the 28-year-old – a stint that saw the player blighted by injury and operating from wide-right, burdened with defensive duties.

Where better could the two reunited than in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium. For Guardiola, Sanchez could be his talisman, ready to take his side to glory. As for the player himself, he would be in a side playing Champions League football next season.

Should the move go ahead, it could be a match made in heaven, and one that could see success for City both domestically, and in Europe – the latter of which their fans are desperate for.
