‘Make a huge difference’… Pat Nevin says signing 28-year-old striker would help Celtic win the league
The league title race is as close now as it has been over the past three seasons as Celtic’s stuttering form has allowed Rangers to claw back an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Whether the Celtic fans like to admit it or not (and I don’t) there is a title challenge on and it’s more to do with Brendan Rodgers‘ side’s poor form than anything else.
With a £60m pot of gold awaiting the winners of the Scottish Premiership through automatic qualification to the Champions League, the stakes on this season’s title have never been higher.
And with Rangers breathing down their necks, Celtic will have to start upping the ante in terms of performances and goals scored.
And Pat Nevin reckons that if Celtic did one piece of business in this January window, it could swing the pendulum in their favour and keep the Championship trophy inside the Celtic Park trophy cabinet.
Nevin said [], “I’ll go 55-45 in Celtic’s favour in terms of percentage (of winning the league).
“But here’s the caveat – it depends on what happens over the next four or five days in terms of forwards, and whether Rangers go and get another.
“A lot of people have mentioned Shankland. If you stuck him up front for Rangers right now, that changes it. If you put Shankland up front for Celtic, it would change it even more in their favour.
“What they do over the next few days in terms of a striker will make a huge difference.”
I’ve stated here on many occasions that I don’t believe that Shankland is the striker to take Celtic forward in terms of Europe.

However, as a striker in the SPFL, the Hearts man has proven over the past two seasons that he has a keen eye for goals.
With 19 to his name already this season, Shankland leads the goalscoring charts in the SPFL. The Scotland international also hit 28 goals in 47 games last season as well. Just imagine what he could do to domestic defences in a team like Celtic. []
Predicted to cost around the £3m mark, Celtic would do well to get Shankland in to help win the title and guarantee £60m worth of Champions League cash.
