‘Madness’… Kevin Campbell now reacts to what he’s hearing about Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney

Kevin Campbell has dismissed claims that Arsenal should recall Kieran Tierney from his loan spell at Real Sociedad.

The Gunners are expected to do some business in the transfer window this month, with Fabrizio Romano claiming this week that a new full-back is on the agenda. That has led to suggestions that Tierney should be recalled, but Campbell is having none of that.

Kevin Campbell reacts to suggestions Arsenal should recall Kieran Tierney

Arsenal signed Kieran Tierney from Celtic back in 2019 for £25 million ().

The Scot was fantastic in his first few years as a Gunner. He became an instant fan favourite at the Emirates and was even viewed as a future captain by many.

However, Tierney fell down the pecking order following Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s arrival before the start of last season, and it became clear that he was no longer a part of Mikel Arteta‘s plans.

Now, Zinchenko is injured at Arsenal, while Takehiro Tomiyasu is off to represent Japan in the Asian Cup. The Gunners only have Jakub Kiwior available in that position now, but the Pole isn’t really a full-back.

Chris Sutton recently suggested that Arsenal should consider recalling Tierney from his loan, but a shocked Kevin Campbell has branded that suggestion as ‘nonsense’ and ‘madness’.

He said on : “I am not going to panic on two results, no chance, I am not. The fact of the matter is, Kieran was in the building three weeks ago, I heard nobody screaming for Kieran “let’s get him back, let’s get him back, let’s get him back”. I heard nobody.

“All of a sudden, we lose two games ‘Oh, you know, let’s get Kieran’. Nonsense! Absolute madness!

“The team have been functioning fine without Kieran. We’ve hit a blip. We’ve hit a bit of a skid that we need to get ourselves out of, and we will.”

Arsenal are unlikely to consider Tierney again

The reason why Kieran Tierney fell out of favour at Arsenal is because he was unable to play that inverted full-back role as well as Alex Zinchenko.

The Scot is more of a traditional full-back who thrives when he’s given space to overlap the winger in front of him. His crossing is brilliant too and when he’s fit, he’s up there with the best.

Mikel Arteta clearly doesn’t feel Tierney is capable of playing in his system, which is why we feel there’s almost no chance he will be recalled this month.

It’s more likely that Arsenal will dive into the market to sign a new versatile left-back – Ajax’s Jorrel Hato has been linked this week.
