‘Made a mess’: Alasdair Gold gives Spurs player 5/10 for display v Arsenal; not Emerson
Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.
Spurs headed to the Emirates hoping to leapfrog their North London rivals at the top of the table.
However, Tottenham ended up leaving empty-handed after finishing the game with ten men.
Arsenal opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Thomas Partey’s long-range effort.
Tottenham were then given the chance to equalise from the spot on the half-hour mark.
Gabriel Magalhaes brought Richarlison down, prompting the referee to award Spurs a penalty.
And Harry Kane made no mistake, hammering the ball down the middle for his seventh North London derby goal.
However, Arsenal edged back in front early in the second half, making it 2-1 in the 49th minute.
Hugo Lloris spilled a Bukayo Saka effort, allowing Gabriel Jesus to prod the ball over the line.
Tottenham’s comeback mission then became much harder after the hour.
Emerson Royal‘s sending-off for his wild lunge at Gabriel Martinelli left Spurs with a mountain to climb.
And Arsenal duly made it three in the 67th minute through Granit Xhaka.
‘Dreadful distribution’
He wrong-footed Eric Dier from Gabriel Martinelli’s flick and rifled a low effort beyond Lloris to make it 3-1.
While Emerson received the lion’s share of the post-match criticism for his red card, he wasn’t the only Spurs player to be slated.
A few other players also flattered to deceive, with Lloris picking up 5/10 from both and the .
Alasdair Gold wrote on football.london: ‘Made an early low save from Martinelli and a big punch from a corner in front of his goal.
‘Had no chance with Partey’s curling effort from outside the box.
‘Dived in bravely at the feet of Jesus before the break after stopping his initial shot.
‘Made a mess with Romero for Arsenal’s second though, pushing out Saka’s shot but then his defender’s attempt to guide it back went under his body for Jesus to poke home.
‘Couldn’t do much about Xhaka’s low finish for Arsenal’s third. Made a late low save from Tierney.
‘Loses a couple of points because it was a crucial time to make an error.’
Meanwhile, the Standard’s Malik Ouzia wrote: ‘Made some crucial saves but dreadful distribution invited pressure and spilled Bukayo Saka shot for Gabriel Jesus goal.’
Even the best make mistakes – TBR View
Lloris has been a wonderful servant for Tottenham for a decade, not to mention being France’s World Cup-winning captain.
But even the best players have off days, and sadly, for Lloris, such a day came during a North London derby.
Nonetheless, Lloris and the rest of the Tottenham squad must quickly pick themselves up ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Eintracht Frankfurt.
