MacAnthony urges Newcastle to sign Toney; says fans would worship him

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony that Newcastle United would look to re-sign Ivan Toney this summer if they had any sense as he continues to impress in the Premier League.

Brentford currently look to be on the periphery of the relegation battle this term. Thomas Frank’s men are eight points clear with eight games remaining.

Almost all of the sides below them have games in hand. And thus, it could well prove to be a nervy end to the campaign for the Bees.

The main reason they find themselves with plenty of breathing space however, is the form of Toney. Only six players have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than the striker, who has 11 so far.

He has caused a number of defenders all kinds of problems this term. And it is not hard to imagine Brentford receiving a raft of offers for Toney at the end of the season.

One club who should be in the mix for Toney, according to MacAnthony, is Newcastle. It was the Posh who landed the 26-year-old from the Magpies. And he went to enjoy a brilliant spell at London Road.

Newcastle are one point clear of Brentford. And their top goalscorer this season has only scored six times. With that, MacAnthony believes that the Magpies must put themselves in the race to sign Toney.

“If Newcastle had any sense they would be signing him and bringing him back,” .

“The Geordies would absolutely worship the ground he walks on because he would score 20 goals in a Newcastle team with better players.”

Newcastle would be making big error not pursuing Toney this summer

Plenty of changes will be expected at St James’ Park this summer. And there is surely set to be an overhaul of the striker options.

Chris Wood has not been an outstanding signing so far. And Callum Wilson, unfortunately, continues to struggle with injuries.

There may be other names on their radar. But Toney is surely one player Newcastle must consider. He has now scored 82 league goals across the last four seasons. And there is still time for that tally to improve further.

Crucially, he has shown that he can score in the Premier League.

that he would cost around £30 million, so his asking price is likely to be considerably higher now. But there are likely to be plenty of Magpies fans who would agree with MacAnthony’s suggestion.
