‘Lunacy’: Pundit questions Eddie Howe over reported Celtic demand

If, as appears to be the case, Eddie Howe is to be appointed the next manager of Celtic, there will be a new Director of Football in place.

The question, however, is whether that appointment is the choice of Howe or the club.

report that Howe has verbally agreed to take the job, but is adamant that he wants Richard Hughes to accompany him.

Howe worked with Hughes at Bournemouth, and the latter remains in his role at the Cherries.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has expressed his reservations about Howe having the power to influence such a decision, and suggested that it’s not up to managers to make that kind of appointment.

Speaking on , he said: “I was just checking that I heard that right, that Eddie Howe wants to determine who the director of football will be…

“Isn’t that a sort of juxtaposition? Why doesn’t he choose which chief executive he wants to bring in and maybe the chairman as well?

“The director of football works for the club, he sits above the manager.and not alongside the manager’s requests for appointment.

“If that is the world we are going into, it is lunacy.

“Is he entitled to set out his terms? Sure, but only realistic ones.

“You can’t sit there and suggest that the director of football is an appointment you make as a football manager.”

John Kennedy remains in charge on an interim basis, and he is set to face two derbies at Ibrox in the coming weeks. Celtic play Rangers in the Scottish Cup fourth round on April 17, before returning to the same venue on May 2 on league business.
