Lucas Digne must improve defensively to become Leighton Baines long-term replacement

Speaking after Everton’s draw with Watford yesterday, Lucas Digne made it clear he would have rather won the game then be treated as the hero. The Frenchman scored the last-minute free-kick to give Everton a 2-2 draw.

Everton fans, of course, loved these comments and it was a fine free-kick from the summer signing. But this goal only papers over the cracks of another ropey display from the French international.

“We saved the defeat and I’m happy with my goal but we would have preferred the win. We need to stay focused and continue the work.”

Because, yet again, he was found wanting defensively. Both of Watford’s goals came from crosses being allowed in from Digne’s side. Blame has certainly been laid at the door of Bernard, for not doing his defensive duties. However, Digne must remember he is a left-back first, not a left-winger.

It is not the first time it has happened this season. Everton fans revelled in his attacking display against West Ham earlier this season. Andriy Yarmolenko, however, just took it as an opportunity. He punished Digne twice in that fixture, Everton’s only home loss this term.

Digne looks a from Barcelona and could be the replacement Everton needed for Leighton Baines.

However, if his defensive work continues to be so lax, the Everton fans will soon turn on him.
