Lovren showed his weaknesses during Liverpool’s win over Huddersfield
Liverpool managed to overcome Huddersfield Town to earn a valuable three points, but it was far from comfortable for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp kept with the same back five that kept a clean sheet against Manchester City, much to the annoyance of many supporters.
Dejan Lovren was named in the starting eleven, which meant that Joe Gomez continued to deputise at right-back. Although he can do a job there, the England international is a natural at centre-back.
Furthermore, he established an excellent partnership with Virgil van Dijk during the opening weeks of the season and it seems short-sighted to break that up. The only reason for the change is to placate Lovren.

However, his performance against Huddersfield Town highlighted why that was an error by Jurgen Klopp. Lovren is a solid defender, but his presence in the back four often causes panic when the opposition side are attacking.
During the match, Huddersfield attempted 13 shots on goal. This is the most that any team has managed against Liverpool in the league this season. Although the Reds kept a clean sheet, it wasn’t a good defensive display.
Klopp has been brave in his selection policy since taking over at Liverpool and that needs to continue. The partnership between Gomez and Virgil van Dijk has the potential to be the solution for years to come. He needs to return to that and drop Lovren.
