‘Love him to join’, ‘Hendo engine’: Some Liverpool fans want 24-year-old signed after display
Italy kicked off Euro 2020 with an impressive win over Turkey on Friday night – and some Liverpool fans on Twitter were drawn to the display from Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella.
Italy put down an early marker in this summer’s Euros with a comprehensive victory last night. It was a dominant performance from the Italians, as they begun the group with three points. They also have Switzerland and Wales to face in their remaining group fixtures.
Merih Demiral’s own goal kickstarted the scoring early in the second half before Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne both added their names to the scoresheet.
Aside from the obvious attacking talent, there was real control for Italy throughout the 90 minutes in the midfield area.
At the heart of that success was Barella.
The 24-year-old is a massive talent who plays for Serie A giants Inter, and he helped them win the league title during the 2020/21 season.
Barella, along with Jorginho and Manuel Locatelli, bossed the centre of the park for Italy against Turkey.
Liverpool fans love what they saw from Barella
If you’re a supporter of any club this summer, you’ll naturally be searching for players at Euro 2020 who you should try sign. For example, Liverpool fans want to see if any midfielders can fill the void left by Georginio Wijnaldum. Meanwhile, Chelsea fans may want to try spot a number nine to solve the striker dilemma at Stamford Bridge.
On day one of the Euros, Barella is an individual attracting attention.
He’s an all-action central midfielder that can be content with his opening performance, and it looks like there should be a lot more to come during the competition from an exciting Italian squad.
The Inter star looked in complete control in the midfield, so it’s doubtful everyone saw him at his very best. However, there will be tougher opponents ahead, and he’s someone that has shown he can perform on the top stage.
He’s a creative threat when pushing into advanced role. Additionally, he’s got great stamina to get up and down for 90 minutes.
Is Barella a good Wijnaldum replacement for Liverpool?
A selection of Liverpool supporters on social media picked him out after his international display as someone that would be a great fit at Anfield next year.
Unfortunately, Jurgen Klopp’s squad will be without Wijnaldum next season. With his exit confirmed, the Merseyside club could really do with signing someone in the same kind of mould.
One Reds fan said Barella has a “Hendo engine”, comparing him to Liverpool’s midfield captain Jordan Henderson. If you play in Klopp’s XI, you need to have top fitness.
No links are connecting Barella with Liverpool, but supporters raise a fair point that he could suit them.
The midfielder’s current deal with Italians Inter doesn’t expire until 2024.
It would be staggering if Inter allowed him to leave given the impact he has on their team. He weighed in with 13 assists across all competitions this season during a great domestic year, but it looks like he’s got even more success planned now with his country.
