‘Lot of potential’: Toby Alderweireld hails ‘very good’ 23-year-old Spurs player

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has waxed lyrical about Sergio Reguilon following his debut for Spurs in midweek.

The 23-year-old, who joined Tottenham from Real Madrid earlier this month, made his Spurs bow in Tuesday’s League Cup meeting with Chelsea.

Reguilon made a mistake early on as he missed his attempted tackle on Cesar Azpilicueta, giving the Blues man time to carve out an opportunity, which led to Timo Werner getting the opener.

However, he made up for it with an impressive display thereafter, showing plenty of attacking intent and setting up Erik Lamela for the equaliser en route to a penalty shootout victory.

Alderweireld praised his new teammate’s attitude after the match, telling : “[Sergio] was very good, he’s very quick, he’s able to go forward and defend.

“He’s in good spirits. Everyone makes mistakes, but there was a lot to do after that moment. But he showed (on Tuesday) he has a lot of potential to help us and be good in that position.”

Alderweireld’s comments echo those of Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, who noted how Reguilon didn’t let the mistake get to him, instead bouncing back to impress for his new side.

It’s very early days but the Spaniard has already shown he has a lot to offer Spurs, with more balance and attacking endeavour down the left flank.

It would be surprising were Reguilon to play against Maccabi Haifa tonight given the quick turnaround and need to rest players, but he’s likely to start at Manchester United on Sunday.
