Loss of Jaden Brown indicates concerning trend for Tottenham’s young players
Tottenham fans may have been shocked to see Jaden Brown depart north London on New Year’s Day, leaving Spurs to join Huddersfield on a two and a half year contract, given that he has featured in every game for the club’s under 23s side this season.
The 19-year-old has played every minute of action for the team since mid-August and looked to be building upon his recent progress which earned him an England under 19 call-up in 2017.
However, his departure points to a concerning long-term trend at the club. Following on from the departure of Reo Griffiths for Olympique Lyonnais in the summer, Brown becomes just the latest promising youngster to depart.
Although this time, the club have given the go ahead for Brown’s exit, it seems unlikely that they would be keen to sell a player who appears to be highly rated by those involved in the under 23 set up.
Whilst Mauricio Pochettino continues to give first team debuts to the likes of Luke Amos and Oliver Skipp, youngsters do have an incentive to stay at the club. The fact that many are leaving despite that could be a cause for concern.
Brown’s progress over the years to come will show if it was the right decision or not, and he will be hoping to fare better than Griffiths, but Tottenham may need to reconsider how they retain their top young talents.
