Longest losing streaks by reigning Premier League champions as Manchester City make it four defeats in a row
Manchester City can currently boast a run of four consecutive Premier League titles – but Pep Guardiola has now watched his side lose four Premier League games in a row.
The Citizens went from a run of 16 mat🐼ches unbeaten to start the 2024/25 campaign, 13 of those coming as wins, to a streak of seven games without victory across all competitions foᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚllowing Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola himself had never experienced such a run throughout his entire managerial career, but how does his current Manchester City side’s struggles compare to other reigning Premier League champions over the years? Let’s take a look.
Only the 2016/17 Leicester City side hold worse run of defeats than Manchester City
In terms of reigning Premier League champions, only ♛the Leicester City side of 2016/17 have recorded a longer run of consecutive defeats than Manchester City now have.
The Foxes suffered a streak of five Premier League defeats in a row between January and February of 2017 – a run of results which cost Claudio Ranieri his job just months after that remarkable title success in 2016.
Club | Season | Run of defeats |
Leicester City | 2016/17 | 5 |
Manchester City | 2024/25 | 4 |
Chelsea | 2015/16 | 3 |
Blackburn Rovers | 1995/96 | 3 |
Leeds United | 1992/93 | 2 |
Chelsea | 2010/11 | 2 |
Manchester United | 2013/14 | 2 |
In the year before, it was Chelsea who put up a miserable defence of their 2014/15 Premier League title – suffering three straight defeats towards𝔉 the end of 2015 which ultimately saw Jose Mourinho sacked by the Blues.
Blackburn Rovers also suffered three straight Premier League defeats in the 1995/96 seaso🦹n –🔯 having won the title in 1994/95 – doing so on two separate occasions that term.
Aside from these losing streaks, the Leeds U🍸nited side of 1992/93, the Chelsea side of 2010/11 and the Manchester Unitedꩵ side of 2013/14 are all level with two consecutive Premier League defeats as reigning champions.

Ho🥂wever, that Leeds United side did happen to end the 1992/93 campaign by going six games without a win, although four of those were draws.
Pep Guardiola is enduring a nightmare
Somehow – not long a𒈔fter that historic treble win in 2022/23 – Manchester City have cemented themselves in the record books as one of the worst performing Premier League champions.
Where does Guardiola – who just signed a new contract – goꦦ from here at Manchester City? Only time will tell.
