Long-term Marco Silva target Abdoulaye Doucoure could thrive against Everton’s depleted midfield

For the third consecutive transfer window, Everton have been linked with Abdoulaye Doucoure. But once again, this move failed to materialise. Marco Silva knows Doucoure well from their time together at Watford so these rumours were understandable.

Just before deadline day, Watford rejected Everton’s £32m bid for Doucoure. Silva was desperately trying to sign a new central midfielder, especially after Idrissa Gueye and James McCarthy departed.

The Doucoure transfer never materialised and now he is set to face Everton. Everton host Watford at Goodison Park and Doucoure will probably be named in Javi Gracia’s starting line-up.

He will face up against a makeshift Everton midfield, considering the injury and suspension problems Silva is faced with. The major problem is Andre Gomes, who is out with an ankle injury.

The Portuguese midfielder limped off against Crystal Palace and was replaced by Jean-Philippe Gbamin. But Everton’s summer signing has admitted that he is not match-fit yet after struggling at Selhurst Park.

Meanwhile, Morgan Schneiderlin is set to miss the game against Watford due to suspension. The Frenchman received a red card against Crystal Palace. This leaves Silva with limited options.

Fabian Delph could come in after he was pictured in training but both him and Gbamin might not be up to speed yet. Tom Davies is likely to return and Dennis Adeniran has been promoted from the academy.

Doucoure could deal Everton a double blow. After his move to Merseyside never came to fruition, he will look to inflict further injury by running riot against a depleted Everton midfield.
