Liverpool’s Rhys Williams sets ambitious target after first Champions League start
Rhys Williams that he wants to become an irreplaceable member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad in the future.
Williams made his first start for the Reds in the Champions League this week. The 19-year-old had previously made his full debut for the club in the Carabao Cup. And he also featured in Liverpool’s wins over Ajax and Midtjylland.

Nevertheless, the clash with Atalanta looked set to be an incredibly tough test for Liverpool and Williams in particular.
The Serie A side are the second-highest scorers in their league this term. Meanwhile, they went into Tuesday’s clash having scored more goals in their opening two group games than any of the other three sides.
However, it was Liverpool who kept finding the back of the net in Italy. The Reds ran out 5-0 winners.

Of course, Diogo Jota took many of the headlines after his stunning hat-trick. But Williams’s performance was lauded by a number of supporters on social media.
The teenager – who was playing on loan in non-league football this time last year – admitted that he still has some way to go before he is a regular name on the team sheet. But he insisted that he is determined to do all he can to reach that level in the future.
“I want to become an irreplaceable piece of this side,” . “It’s a great team with great players. I know it’s going to be hard but I’m willing to put the effort in, keep working and hopefully keep putting in performances when I get the chance.”
Williams’s emergence may not make up for Virgil van Dijk’s injury situation. But there does look to be a fantastic opportunity for the youngster to play fairly regularly over the coming months.
He has, so far, stepped up to every test put in front of him. So while becoming irreplaceable seems an incredibly ambitious target at this stage, he looks to have every chance of establishing himself as an important member of the squad before too long.
