Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster fires brace on return from injury
Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster marked his return from injury hell with two goals against Illinois outfit Northwestern University ().
The 18-year-old was back playing having been sidelined since January 2018 after surgery on both his knee and ankle.
The striker landed awkwardly during a match against Manchester City with the U23s and required oxygen and a stretcher.
It’s been a long road to recovery for Brewster, but clearly there is now light at the end of the tunnel.
Despite only getting 45 minutes, the English youth international impressed at the club’s Kirkby Academy.
TBR’s view
Brewster’s positive display after such a long time out was highly encouraging.
Should he keep working hard to get back to full fitness, then it could mean there will be no real need for the club to keep Daniel Sturridge for the 2019/2020 season.
Jurgen Klopp has used Sturridge sparingly once again this term, preferring Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and even Divock Origi up top.
He is out of contract in June, and Brewster’s progress between now and June could genuinely dictate whether the club offer Sturridge an extension or not.
There’s a good chance he will be moved on; of his 26 appearances for the club this term, only five have been starts.
His departure would then pave the way for Brewster to come in and start developing in the first-team.
The U17 World Cup winner showed before his injury nightmare that he is very much one for the future at Anfield, and 2019/2020 could be his time to shine.
