Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool player made a ‘misjudgment’ in the Champions League
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has implied to the that the Reds were knocked out of the Champions League thanks to a mistake from goalkeeper Adrian.
The Reds were 2-0 up against Atletico Madrid before the Spaniards roared back and won 3-2 after extra time.
Diego Simeone’s men had their comeback sparked when Adrian fluffed a clearance straight to Joao Felix.
The Portuguese sensation set up Marcos Llorente who fired in the all-important away goal for the visitors.
Van Dijk has now suggested that Liverpool were comfortable until Adrian’s moment of madness.
“Anyone can make a mistake. It happens. But Adrian’s misjudgment seems to turn the game around. I’m not going to say anything about that. You win together, you lose together. Things happen in matches. We lost. That’s tough to take.”
The defender was instrumental in Liverpool winning the Champions League last season.
He would have dearly liked to have lifted the trophy again at the end of this season but that won’t be the case.
Over the course of the two legs, Liverpool did more than enough to win the tie. Jan Oblak was inspired in the Atletico goal and perhaps the second leg was a tale of two goalkeepers.
Adrian was a free agent in the summer when he signed for Liverpool and it’s fair to say Jurgen Klopp probably didn’t expect him to be playing as much as he is.
Two injuries to Alisson have come at the worst possible time and ultimately his mistake did cost Liverpool.
With the Brazilian not likely to return just yet, Liverpool might need to rely on Adrian again this season.
The Spaniard will hope to make amends for his part in the Reds’ Champions League exit.
