Liverpool round-up: £25m Southampton man linked; veterans on their way out?
Liverpool; and more specifically Jürgen Klopp, have made it clear that all transfer business needs to be conducted in a timely manner. Three signings have already been announced with Jöel Matip, Marko Grujic and Loris Karius coming into to tighten up the Red’s defence and midfield respectively.
It wouldn’t be a Liverpool transfer window without a protracted saga where a big-name player rejects the club. Mario Götze has declared that he will be staying at Bayern Munich after it emerged that the Germans were keen to offload the playmaker for a meagre figure of £20 million. For the most part, Liverpool fans have accepted that Götze’s signature will not be on any Liverpool documents this summer.
What the Anfield faithful believe, especially the hypochondriacs on Twitter, is that Sadio Mané is a step down and should not be signed . While Liverpool may need to strengthen in wide areas Mané is not the way to go. The Senegalese winger is brilliant, but inconsistently so. According to he scored two goals against Liverpool to inspire a superb comeback, and then after a month’s drought scored 5 goals in 3 games.
is reporting the move for Mané and the fee is believed to be in the region of £25 million. If this is true it would make the deal even less attractive when you consider Bayern Munich is giving Götze away for £5 million less than what Southampton is asking for.
One deal which seems to be pure conjecture and likely down to the hysteria that comes with the silly season is that the is reporting that Yacine Brahimi is headed to Liverpool in a deal worth £45 million. The 26-year-old Algerian has scored 11 goals this season in 48 appearances. It would cost £1.1 million per goal he scored this season – an inconceivable deal when put like this.
Another area that needs strengthening is left-back. The Europa League final defeat against Sevilla was the final straw for many fans as far as Alberto Moreno is concerned. The Spaniard has been very poor this season defensively and at times it appears he’d rather play as a left wing. According to the Liverpool will submit a bid of £4 million to try and pry a young full-back from Premier League champions’ Leicester – Ben Chilwell. The bid will need to be improved at some point with Arsenal already having a £5 million bid rejected in January.
Another option for the Reds is Raphael Guerreiro. There is competition for his signature with reporting that Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund are both interested in the Portuguese full -back’s services. Lorient’s vice-president Alex Hayes confirmed this but said a bid would have to be made that could not be turned down.
Since Klopp signed as Liverpool manager there has been no shortage of German players linked with Liverpool. The latest; a left-back as well, is . The news in this transfer rumour is that Köln have signed a new left back; Konstantin Rausch, possibly opening up a move for Hector. The German international, according to , didn’t make a single defensive error this season compared to Alberto Moreno who made two errors in defence and one leading to a goal.
Croatian youngster over a potential move to Liverpool. In 2015, the 19-year-old won the ‘Croatian Hope of the Year’ – an award for the best young Croatian player of the year.
Jürgen Klopp clearly has plans to change Liverpool and it is really a matter of time to see if these deals materialize or are just rumours. As yet, there haven’t been very many outs at Liverpool, with only Jordan Rossiter confirmed to have left the club signing a four-year deal with Rangers. are reporting that Watford are in for Jerome Sinclair as well. Both lads are fringe players and were never likely to impact on the team next season, especially considering the summer additions in their respective positions.
One player that seems set to leave will be missed by everyone connected with Liverpool: Kolo Toure. The report that the Ivorian will not be offered a contract to stay on next term when his current deal expires. Toure, one of Arsenal’s Invincible’s, was superb in coming in for Mamadou Sakho after the Frenchman was suspended for substance abuse.
Another centre-back who seems likely to leave this transfer window is Martin Skrtel, who has been on the bench of late and doesn’t seem likely to return with the transfer of Matip from Schalke. According to the , “Skrtel is 90% sure” to leave Liverpool before next season, but where to? Skrtel’s agent rubbished reports that a move had been finalized to take the Slovakian to Besiktas.
There are a great deal of changes currently being implemented at Anfield, with the transfers taking centre stage, in addition to the stadium expansion, so next season should be an exciting if you look through red-tinted glasses.
