Liverpool transfer: Reds reject chance to sign £8.5m-rated player
Liverpool have rejected the chance to re-sign Ozan Kabak for a cut-price £8.5 million. The Reds had the Turkish central defender on loan for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.
Schalke’s perilous financial situation has seen them drop their asking price. It hasn’t been enough to persuade Liverpool to make him part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad for next season, however.
claim that the Reds don’t feel they need another centre-back. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all now fit, whilst the club have also signed Ibrahima Konate this summer.
Liverpool also have youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams in their squad – although they could leave this summer either on loan or in permanent deals.
Kabak played 13 times for the Reds last season. He helped the club reach the last eight of the Champions League and secure a place in the competition with a top-four finish in the Premier League.
He did look like something of a work in progress though. Kabak is only young and perhaps Klopp feels he doesn’t need another player with potential, over someone for the here and now.
After a 2-0 win over Leipzig last season, Klopp called Kabakafter his performance against the Bundesliga outfit.
As a result, the player might well be left that the club isn’t willing to re-sign him, especially given his bargain price.
Liverpool making the right choice over Kabak
The Reds managed to get the Turkey international in last season, at a time when they were desperately short of central defenders.
Now, with a full quota of players at Klopp’s disposal, it’s fair to say they don’t really need him to return.
Kabak did a decent job but he doesn’t really look good enough to play regularly in a team that wants to challenge for the title.
Liverpool are better off moving on and in Konate they have signed a defender who could become one of the very best in Europe in the next few years.
For Kabak, he will hope to win a move elsewhere in the Premier League during the summer transfer window.
