Liverpool told to sign Premier League star that Jota branded ‘unbelievable’ in 2020

that Liverpool have got to consider a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez in January. Merson believes Diogo Jota’s old teammate would be ideal for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds are about to lose both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in January, with both jetting off to represent their countries at the African Cup of Nations. Both are expected to last the duration, with Egypt and Senegal among the favourites.

Liverpool do still have Divock Origi, Jota, Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino to fill the void. But Origi is set to leave in the summer, while Minamino could also depart – having already spent time on loan at Southampton.

Jimenez, meanwhile, has returned from a long-term head injury that put his career in doubt – and is back in action at Wolves. He has three goals in 17 games, but that could be more down to the way Bruno Lage has his side playing.

Indeed, Wolves are incredibly pragmatic at the moment – scoring just two goals in their last eight Premier League games, but also keeping five clean sheets. Merson urged Liverpool to consider the 91-time Mexico international.

“They need a proper centre forward and if they brought in Jimenez he would play. He wouldn’t need to play every week but he would get game time. Liverpool play so many games a season, he could give them something different.

“He’s a bigger version of Firmino who scores more goals. He has played with Jota enough times at Wolves. I think he ticks the boxes. He would come in and not kick up a stink if he isn’t playing every week. That’s what they need.”

Merson on Jimenez: Liverpool could do a whole lot worse

While the chances of Liverpool signing a player already in his thirties is unlikely, £41,000-a-week () Jimenez is the kind of striker they need to be looking at. Not only because

But because Origi, the club’s only proper centre-forward, is likely to leave at the end of the season. The Belgian’s contract is up and the chances of it being renewed are small. Jimenez replacing Origi would be superb business.
