Liverpool told £24m star is the ‘perfect fit’ for Klopp’s side, out of contract in summer
Liverpool are reportedly pursuing a January deal to sign Gladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, and Dietmar Hamann has that the Switzerland star is a “perfect fit” for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Zakaria, 24, is renowned as one of the best midfielders in German football – without playing for the likes of Bayern, Dortmund or Leipzig. He has been sensational for Gladbach, since joining in 2017.
Liverpool are one of a number of European heavyweights looking to sign the 40-time international. It is believed a fee of £24million will be enough to get him next month.
But of course, Liverpool could land Zakaria on a free transfer from January 1. A pre-contract arrangement could occur, meaning Liverpool would get Zakaria for nothing – but in the summer.
Asked whether Zakaria would be a good signing for Liverpool, 2005 Champions League hero Hamann stated that the powerhouse would be the “perfect fit” for the Anfield club if he does sign.

“I think his game is definitely suited to the Premier League,” Hamann said. “He could be a player for Liverpool, he’s a player that has a great engine on him and he could play a more defensive role if Fabinho was missing.
“He can also play in a more attacking role, so he could be a player that would be a good fit, but he’s definitely someone who could make the move to the Premier League in general.”
Hamann on Zakaria: Liverpool have got to make their move, but January?
Zakaria would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool. What it gives the Reds is the exact calibre of player Klopp needs in his midfield engine room. He has the legs, he has the power, he has the ability.
But do they need to splash the cash and sign him next month? Or are they well-equipped enough to wait until the summer, and get him for nothing? Liverpool would be better served saving £24million.
Instead, they should sign him on a free – given the Reds have Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Thiago and more. In the summer, Milner’s contract is up, and Zakaria is an ideal replacement.
