Liverpool tipped to try and sign £51m midfielder in January

The Arne Slot era at Liverpool has started brilliantly.

The Reds are top of the Premier League right now, and there’s a growing feeling that Liverpool could challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Of course, any title challenge may have to be subsidised by January transfer additions, and the Reds already have some winter plans in mind.

Liverpool have been active in January transfer windows in recent years signing the likes of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz in the winter.

Michael Kayode is a target for Liverpool heading into January, and according to Ian Doyle, speaking on the Blood Red Podcast, Liverpool could revisit their interest in Martin Zubimendi.

Liverpool could go for Martin Zubimendi in January

Doyle shared what he knows about Zubimendi and Liverpool.

Liverpool went for Zubimendi in the summer, but, ultimately, he decided to stay at Real Sociedad.

However, the Reds still have money set aside to make this signing, and if the Spaniard decides he wants the move, Liverpool will be there waiting.

“They don’t need loads of players, but we have seen before that if they can add one or two they will spend in January,” Doyle said.

“If Zubimendi wants to leave Real Sociedad in January I think Liverpool would try to sign him. We know they have the money there for him, I don’t know what the deal is with the release clause there, £51m is it? If he fancies it, Liverpool quite clearly will go in for him.”

How does Martin Zubimendi feel about joining Liverpool?

Liverpool could look to bring Zubimendi to Anfield in January, but they may struggle to get this deal done.

Indeed, according to Steve Kay, Zubimendi really isn’t keen to leave Real Sociedad as he’s not fussed about playing for a big club.

According to people I’ve been talking to he’s a strange man, he’s a strange character,” Kay said.

“He’s someone who doesn’t care about playing for teams like Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. He’s happy to play where he is, finish fourth, fifth or sixth. He loves where he lives and that’s him. The Matt Le Tissier of La Liga I suppose.”

Zubimendi is fiercely loyal to Real Sociedad, and while Liverpool may try their best to get this deal done, they might have a tough time getting this one over the line.

Liverpool do still need more midfield reinforcements, but it would be a surprise if they managed to sign Zubimendi in the winter transfer window.
