Liverpool think they have a player with more potential than 21-year-old Man City sold for £19m

Liverpool believe that Caoimhin Kelleher has even more potential than one Premier League side’s record signing, having rejected a £15 million bid for the goalkeeper on deadline day.

Caoimhin Kelleher was at the centre of one of the only pieces of potential deadline day drama concerning Liverpool on Thursday.

Nottingham Forest made a £15 million bid for Kelleher. However, Liverpool have knocked back the offer. And Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are seemingly set to sign Matz Sels instead.

Liverpool believe Caoimhin Kelleher has more potential than James Trafford

Liverpool have used the deal Manchester City did with Burnley to sell James Trafford for £19 million in the summer. The Reds believe that Kelleher is further along in his development and has greater potential than Trafford.

Reds will hope to keep 25-year-old for as long as possible

Selling Kelleher would have made little sense unless the 25-year-old was pushing for the move. Ultimately, he is one of the best backups in the Premier League.

Kelleher has impressed almost whenever he has played for Liverpool. And if the Reds do lose Alisson Becker to injury at any stage, Jurgen Klopp can be confident that Kelleher will be ready to come in and give a good account of himself.

Trafford is a few years younger. But goalkeepers often peak a lot later anyway. So Kelleher’s best years are very much in front of him.

Liverpool will hope that he sticks around for some time to come.
