Liverpool target remains coy despite links with £18m Anfield move

Olympiacos defender Ruben Semedo has refused to rule out a January move to Liverpool after being linked with the Premier League champions.

The centre-back has been linked with a move to Anfield with the Reds likely to be in the market for a defender when the window reopens.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both currently sidelined long-term and another option would be ideal.

The 26-year-old was recently interviewed by Portuguese newspaper and admitted discussing it was difficult.

He said: “Oh, only difficult questions.

“I heard that and it’s always good to see my name linked to big clubs. Let’s see what happens in the future./p>

Semedo joined the Greek champions from Sporting Lisbon and is valued at £18 million by his current club

The ball-playing central defender would follow Kostas Tsimikas in joining Liverpool from Olympiacos if he does make the move in January.

His former teammate has struggled to oust Andy Robertson from the left-back spot but Semedo should see opportunities as a given.

Liverpool are desperate for some options at the back, with all three senior options currently out injured.

Signing the player for as little as £18 million does seem to make a lot of sense.

Liverpool might pursue a stellar option during the summer window but doing that in January would prove very tricky indeed.

With that in mind, sealing a deal for Semedo would provide Liverpool with a solid option for the second half of the season.

Jurgen Klopp will want to secure another Premier League title and if that goal is met, a defender looks a must.

It would be a bit responsibility to place on Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips and some experience could be telling in the title race.

With Semedo coy on a potential Olympiacos departure, Liverpool should prepare to pounce.
