Liverpool: Striker to leave; reaction to Tottenham victory; Uruguayan keen on move
Despite being the hero with a matchwinning brace at Anfield in EFL Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur last night, Daniel Sturridge could be on his way out of the club according to talkSPORT’s Micky Quinn, who :
“I’ve heard on the grapevine that Klopp is not happy with Sturridge. Klopp really gave him an ear-bashing a couple of games ago. To me, the one thing about Liverpool is they’ve got so much talent in attack. They’ve got Coutinho, Firmino, Origi, Lallana – there are a lot of options and it’s probably the one position where they can afford to let a player go… You can’t fault his goalscoring ability, but does he work hard enough in the other aspects of the game? I think he might be gone in the January transfer window.”
Sturridge’s display last night showed much of what he has shown this season, with flashes of brilliance surrounded by abject failure as he could easily have ended the fixture with four or five goals to his name.
However, the German only had praise for the forward after his display against Spurs. Sturridge excelled alongside Divock Origi in a front two, a system used for the first time so far this campaign, and Klopp was pleased with his performance, :
“That’s his strength, he’s a finisher, a really good striker. I never doubted him even when he didn’t score.”
Klopp also reserved special praise for a number of youngsters, with Trent Alexander-Arnold making his professional debut and the likes of Ovie Ejaria and Kevin Stewart also starting for the Reds for the first time. Klopp :
“The youngsters were really good. All of them. Trent Alexander-Arnold made a wonderful start in the game. They can play better but with the pressure and new circumstances it was really good. We had the bigger chances and we deserved to win. We created a wonderful atmosphere and nobody could leave early.”
Another youngster who could soon be signing on for the club is Uruguayan 17-year-old Agustin Davila. The Atletico Penarol forward has become a sensation in his local club’s youth ranks and was invited to Merseyside for a two week trial, and has done enough to impress bosses in to making him an offer, claim the .
Davila is desperate to complete the move and believes that signing for the Reds is the next step in his career as he looks to make the move to Europe from South America early in his career as he seeks to reach his undoubted potential.
