Liverpool star Nat Phillips says he wants to emulate Arsenal player
that Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is looking to emulate the success Rob Holding has enjoyed at Arsenal, having both been at Bolton before switching to some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Phillips, 24, has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Liverpool – proving to be one of the only beneficiaries of Liverpool’s centre-back crisis. It came after almost leaving Liverpool for just £2.5million last summer ().
But injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and even Jordan Henderson has seen Phillips given a go. Despite the signings of Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies, he remains first choice – starting their last seven games.
Looking to the future, the Phillips is keen to follow in the footsteps of Arsenal’s £25,000-a-week () defender Holding – who also swapped Bolton for the Premier League, and is an established Arsenal player.
The report reads: “His role model is not a great star but Rob Holding, a former team-mate for Bolton’s Under-23, who surprised many by going to Arsenal and, amid many big signings, stayed in the first team.”
TBR’s view – Can Phillips match Holding?
The difference is that at Arsenal, Holding has remained at least on the bench or on the fringes when everyone is fit and even at times – starts ahead of the likes of David Luiz. He is probably first choice at the moment.
When van Dijk, Gomez and Matip all return – it will be interesting to see where Phillips is ranked. A permanent deal could be orchestrated for Kabak, while another signing might be made. Davies has made no impact whatsoever.
Yes, he can match Holding in being a regular at a Premier League club – but in order to achieve that, the likelihood is that he will have to find a top-tier English side that will give him consistent game time.
