Liverpool star Fabinho is a mash-up of Mascherano and Alonso
Liverpool midfielder Fabinho starred again for the Reds on Wednesday night.
Starting his fifth straight game, the Brazilian was in fine fettle at his usual holding midfield role against Watford – snuffing out fires and keeping things ticking over in possession.
The summer signing from AS Monaco dominated from the base, and further strengthened his case to be the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet.
His consistent performances over the past couple of months have been nothing short of impressive, and they’ve made a total mockery of the speculation linking him with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.
Fabinho has emerged as a huge player for Liverpool and there are aspects of his game that make him comparable to two former superstars at Anfield.
Mascherano and Alonso rolled into one?
Fabinho is known for being a defensive midfielder who is fierce but clean in the tackle.
He can be snappy when the situation demands it, and arguably he is a lot like Javier Mascherano in that sense.
The Argentine was excellent at shutting down opposition attacks, whether that having been through tackling or intercepting – Fabinho has certainly proved he can do both of these things effectively.
And on the flip side, Fabinho is actually a very good passer of a football.
His defensive work earns him the plaudits but his passing range is extremely underrated.
The way he recycles possession is reminiscent of Xabi Alonso – the Spaniard, of course, was one of the finest passers of a ball the Premier League has ever seen.
Fabinho will struggle to be better than him, but there are certainly shades of Alonso in his game at times.
