Graeme Souness slams Tottenham ahead of Liverpool showdown

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has launched an astonishing attack on Tottenham stating that they shouldn’t be in the Champions League Final, in an interview with

Spurs take on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano tomorrow night. Both sides completed truly heroic comebacks in their semi-finals, setting up an all-English final for the first time since 2008.

Liverpool lost the first leg of their semi-final 3-0 to Barcelona before winning 4-0 at Anfield. Spurs needed three second-half goals in their contest with Ajax and scored the decisive goal with the last kick of the game in the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Souness, however, isn’t overly impressed with Spurs ahead of their biggest night for several years.

“You say to anyone at the start of the season this team is going to lose 19 games in all competitions and yet they’ll find themselves in the final of the Champions League you’d say you’re talking nonsense.

“They’ve somehow got there and I think they’re very fortunate to be there.”

Liverpool head into tomorrow’s final looking to put behind them the disappointment of last year. The Reds were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid and both Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino will look to claim their first silverware for their respective clubs.

TBR Verdict

These comments from Souness smack of a man worried that another English club will lay their hands on a trophy that Liverpool have become attached too over the years.

Should the Reds win tomorrow it will be their sixth trophy in the competition. Souness knows, however, that Klopp can’t keep finishing as the bridesmaid and he needs his own day in the sun.

There is also an element of disrespect towards Spurs here. Pochettino’s side have defeated Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax to reach this stage and they are in the final on merit.

If the Spurs boss was looking for any more motivation to relay to his players ahead of tomorrow’s game, then he would be wise to pin Souness’ comments on the dressing room wall.
