Liverpool signed ‘incredible’ player after Jurgen Klopp received glowing reference from Mats Hummels
Mats Hummels played his part in Liverpool signing one player during the previous summer transfer window, with the centre-back giving Jurgen Klopp a glowing reference before a move to Anfield took place.
In many ways, Arne Slot has been handed a daunting task on Merseyside; trying to follow on from what Jurgen Klopp achieved during his time at Liverpool. But what will certainly help is the fact that Klopp has handed over such an outstanding squad – a squad which very much threatened to win the Premier League title last year.
It is going to be interesting to see which players thrive under Slot, as the Dutchman will have his own ideas concerning how to get the Reds across the line this season.
Mats Hummels recommended Liverpool sign player last summer
And with that, there may be one or two surprises regarding who shines from this coming season.
Someone who may not necessarily be being tipped for great things, but has already managed to surprise a lot of doubters in the Premier League is Wataru Endo, with the Japan international largely an unknown quantity when he signed last year.
Endo arrived from Stuttgart as Liverpool looked to refresh a midfield which had lost the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

It was not always easy for the 31-year-old. The low point probably came when Endo was taken off at half-time against Crystal Palace after a torrid time in the first-half. But Endo proved to be an ‘incredible’ signing for Liverpool, getting better and better as the campaign went on.
He may have shocked some, but it seems that those who had previously seen the midfielder play would not have been taken aback by his success, with the reporting that Klopp received glowing references from several contacts in Germany, including Mats Hummels.
Liverpool’s stance on keeping Wataru Endo this summer
Interestingly, Hummels has faced Endo six times in his career, with Stuttgart only beating Borussia Dortmund on one occasion in that run. So it says something that the World Cup winner was impressed enough to rave about him to Klopp.
There has been speculation over Endo’s future this summer. The Daily Mail reports that Marseille have seen a bid for the midfielder rejected by the Reds.
Some at Liverpool have insisted that there is no chance Endo is sold, so the Ligue 1 side will seemingly have to up their bid significantly if they want to stand any chance of convincing the Reds into a sale.
Hummels will perhaps argue that Liverpool should dig their heels in and make sure Endo goes nowhere this summer.
