Liverpool should swoop to bring Coady back if they sell Matip to struggling Fulham

Joel Matip looked a shrewd cut-price recruit for Liverpool but he has not quite developed as hoped and finds himself fourth in the Anfield central defensive pecking order.

The German is behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren in Jurgen Klopp’s thinking and that has heartened struggling Fulham in their pursuit of him to shore up their leaky defence.

Matip would not be the biggest loss for Klopp, but it would become important that he brings in another centre-half of the right calibre to plug the gap and retain enough squad depth for a trophy hunt on multiple front.

Conor Coady departed Anfield as a young player who had failed to make an impact as a central midfield player, but is now an accomplished Premier League central defender at Wolves.

He is a leader, capable of playing out from the back and is unlucky not to have been included in the England squad yet.

The project at Wolves is so exciting that he would likely be reluctant to leave but the lure of rejoining his hometown club as an established first-team member might be too much to resist.

The fans would love to see one of their own come back and he would undoubtedly be an upgrade on Matip, on current form.
