Liverpool should have loaned Takumi Minamino back to Salzburg until the end of the season

Liverpool moved fast to get their January transfer business wrapped up this season. for Takumi Minamino in January, having agreed the deal at the end of December.

It was a bold move from Liverpool but completely justified considering the Japan international’s stunning displays for Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.

However, it has been a tough start to life at Anfield.

Minamino has failed to register a goal or an assist for the club in his first six appearances. This week, he was criticised for a disappointing performance against Chelsea in the FA Cup.

It certainly seems as though Minamino is just finding it tough to settle into his new team at present.

The question has to be asked, whether Liverpool would have been better off letting him remain at Salzburg on loan till the end of the season?

The Austrian side would have undoubtedly enjoyed keeping him on board and Liverpool would have got their man in the summer.

Instead, Minamino is struggling to fit in, like trying to jump onto a motoring locomotive.

If he had arrived in the summer, Minamino could have eased his way in through pre-season and it might have been a smoother transition.

Instead, he is trying to keep up with a Liverpool team that have been flying this season and it is proving a tough task. Hopefully, he can soon get up to speed. However, it is clear Liverpool should have considered the timing of this deal with more care and Minamino would have benefited from remaining in Austria until the end of the season.
