Liverpool should consider January swoop for Jerome Boateng amid contract reports

Liverpool have found themselves in something of a predicament defensively, with a number of injuries recently hitting the club’s senior central defenders.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out of action for much of the season, there are already plenty of rumours going around regarding a potential January incoming.

So should Liverpool consider a World Cup-winning defender who has previously called Jurgen Klopp ‘world-class

Jerome Boateng is out of contract next summer and, although this has been disputed, he will not be receiving a new deal.

It means Bayern will be losing the 2014 World Cup winner on a free transfer, or, they can sell him and make some money in January.

It is not dissimilar to the situation Bayern found themselves in with Thiago Alcantara in the summer, which Liverpool utilised to their full advantage.

Boateng is also a huge fan of Klopp. Speaking to the ahead of the Andre Ward v Sergei Kovalev fight he called Klopp ‘world-class

“I think he is a world-class coach,he stated, as “He built a very good team at Dortmund. I think how he treats a player, how he motivates a player, is a very good coach. What I heard from my brother, he played under him. I have not had the chance to play under him./span>

So there is admiration there and Klopp, who once got the best out of Jerome’s notoriously difficult brother Kevin-Prince, might be onto a winner here.

If Liverpool could negotiate a decent price and hand Boateng an 18-month deal in January, he could provide quality cover for the rest of this season and beyond.

It is certainly worth asking the question at the very least.
