Liverpool set for another Robertson-type success story next season – TBR View

Liverpool defender Ben Davies looks likely to stay at Anfield, according to .

And Reds fans could potentially see the emergence of another Andrew Robertson-style success story.

The previously suggested that Liverpool were open to letting Davies leave, with the likes of Bournemouth and Celtic eyeing a deal.

Furthermore, the outlet claimed the Reds would rather sell for a “hefty profit” instead of loaning him out.

However, has since reported that Davies doesn’t want to leave and that he wants to prove himself at Anfield.

In addition, Klopp has apparently told Davies that he wants him to stay.

And given Davies is in Liverpool’s pre-season plans and in the 34-man squad to head to Austria, it looks as though he’ll get his chance.

“He’s a really good footballer”

Davies completed a January deadline day move to Anfield from Championship side Preston.

The 25-year-old, who was in the final six months of his contract, joined Liverpool on a long-term deal for a reported £2million fee.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip ruled out long term, the 2019-20 Premier League champions were forced into action.

Klopp admitted that, in a “normal” transfer window, he likely wouldn’t have looked at a team like Preston for reinforcements.

However, he appeared excited about the opportunity handed to Davies in wake of the club’s defensive issues.

Klopp also said Davies really impressed him and his coaches.

“Since we saw him and since our situation got clearer and clearer, the problems we had, when we saw him we got really excited about it and thought, ‘wow’,” he told the Liverpool at the time.

“We see the potential really. We see the quality and we see the potential as well because he’s 25 and there’s a lot to come for him.

“I love a lot about his play. He’s a really good footballer, looks like a proper leader in this Preston team.

“Good in challenges, looks football smart, can play different positions because he played in a back three and a back four and all these things.

“That makes him really interesting so I’m really looking forward to working with him.

“I know for him it’s an opportunity and I see it exactly the same for us, that it’s a really good thing to do.”

“Ben will play when he will play”

Six months on, however, and Davies hasn’t made a single appearance for Liverpool.

Despite this, reported at the end of May that the Reds weren’t looking to sell the defender.

They claimed that Klopp felt Davies needed time to adjust to Liverpool’s style of play, similar to when Andrew Robertson signed from Hull in the summer of 2017.

This echoes what Klopp said about Davies back in March ahead of the Wolves game.

“Ben had a test to adapt, it was always clear,” the quoted him as saying.

“A lot of players came here to Liverpool and the most famous story is maybe Andy Robertson.

“It took him half a year in a normal season to settle in. Ben is a really good player but he has to get used to all the stuff here as well.

“What we have now is options and hopefully it will stay like this. Ben will play when he will play. That’s how it is.”
