Liverpool round-up: Rodgers’ sacking cost revealed; midfielder set for new deal; duo miss training
The state that club accounts for the last financial year have shown that the club were forced to fork out £15.669 million to dismiss Brendan Rodgers and his backroom staff in October 2015. The now Celtic boss had two and a half years left on his contract and made up much of that sum.
Other coaches, such as Sean O’Driscoll, were also given severance packages as part of their dismissal, as the club cleaned the decks to allow Jurgen Klopp to bring in his own backroom team when he arrived after a spell out of the game having left Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
The club have been dealt a blow in their transfer pursuits as claim that West Ham are set to offer a new contract to Spanish midfielder Pedro Obiang, who the reported was a target for the Reds in January. A rumoured £18 million move didn’t materialise in the winter transfer window, but a summer move could still be possible.
The central midfielder has impressed many with his performances this season after being linked with a move away in the summer, with the youngster a possible option to compete with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Emre Can in midfield.
Until then, though, the team face a spell without their captain Henderson alongside striker Daniel Sturridge as the that neither player featured in training alongside their first team team-mates on Tuesday as they remain on the sidelines with different injuries.
Henderson is fighting to overcome a foot problem whilst Sturridge has picked up a hip issue after being forced out of training with a virus whilst the club were away in Spain for a training camp.
