Liverpool round-up: Premier League winner not joining; Solanke on England duty; Reds edge ahead in defender race
Liverpool’s search for a left-back is set to continue after free agent Gael Clichy, who’s lengthy stay with Manchester City is coming to an end, is not heading to Anfield. The Reds have been on the hunt to reinforce the full-back position since Alberto Moreno’s loss of form forced Jurgen Klopp to operate James Milner at left-back.
Clichy, who has also played in the Premier League with Arsenal, was reportedly set to sign a two-year deal with the Reds, but the have since suggested that the deal is off. The Frenchman would bring English top flight know-how and experience to the Reds’ backline but he may not be energetic enough for Klopp’s high intensity, pressing style.
Other targets, such as Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy have also been linked, but they too also appear to be heading elsewhere. The Fulham youngster has been heavily linked with Tottenham, while Mendy is set to move to Manchester City.
One signing that Liverpool have already completed is the acquisition of Dominic Solanke from Chelsea. The youngster is to team up with his new side when his contract expires with the Blues, as reported by . In the meantime, the 19-year-old is on international duty with England’s U20s and he had a hand in both their goals in the 2-1 win against Costa Rica.
Having already strengthened their attacking outlet, fans were sent into overdrive as Mohamed Salah’s agent posted an Instagram photo of a plane ticket from Rome to London while he also followed the Reds on the social media platform, as reported by the . Having already been linked with Liverpool previously, fans have again started to wonder whether Salah will be joining them ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
Another player that has been repeatedly linked to Anfield is Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutchman has been impressive during his spell with the Saints and would certainly provide competition, if not an upgrade, to Liverpool’s current options.
The reported that, while Chelsea are in pole position and Arsenal are offering the best financial package, Van Dijk could sign for Liverpool as he is keen to work with Jurgen Klopp. The German boss, who is entering his second full season with the Reds, may have to fork out around £50m for the Saints defender, but if it helps them build on their fourth place finish, it could prove to be money well spent.
