Liverpool round-up: Premier League winner linked; Klopp reacts to Tottenham win; Matip discusses ban
The claim that both Liverpool and Arsenal are monitoring Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a view to making a summer move for the Danish international who was vital to the Foxes’ glorious Premier League campaign last season.
With neither Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius having convinced Jurgen Klopp this season, a move for a goalkeeper in the summer may not come as a shock to Liverpool fans, but Claudio Ranieri has so far dismissed any talk of a move saying that the club will not allow their goalkeeper to leave.
The biggest news story of the weekend though was undoubtedly the victory over Tottenham yesterday, with Sadio Mane’s brace proving decisive. After the game, Jurgen Klopp reflected on the three points by :
“It can be different, you can win a game and you are not happy with the performance. Tonight I’m really happy with the performance, with a few specific things of the performance… we really dealt well with it and were really concentrated, improved defensively in this game and learned from the game. That was really good and I think it was absolutely well deserved. The atmosphere [was] fantastic, you could really feel that everybody was waiting for a game like this again. So, for tonight everything is good.”
One point behind Arsenal in fourth place, it is now time for the Reds to try to fight their way back into the top four after a disappointing January collapse for a team that had looked formidable.
That victory over Tottenham was the Red’s first of 2017 in the Premier League, but the year has been worse for Joel Matip than most. A club versus country row with Cameroon saw the central defender suspended for much of January, as he discussed with Football Focus on the :
“It was really frustrating and disappointing because I don’t understand it. I couldn’t understand it. Now it’s solved, now I hope I can help my teammates and the club to where it normally stands. The beginning [of the season] was not that easy, I had a few problems with my right foot. But after I came back, getting better and better, I also played. We had a good time here at Liverpool, we were successful and it was really nice for me and my teammates.”
Matip was one of those to shine in the win, alongside Lucas Leiva ensuring that Harry Kane was kept quiet throughout.
